Side Story 4[B]
“…It seems I have to return to where I came from soon.”
I’m beginning to understand what’s happening.
Why did I end up in this world?
Originally, the Saint was an existence that the world created as a countermeasure against Witches.
However, there was no way the existing Saint could put up any resistance against the “Witch” …And in the first place, that very Saint was taken over by the Witch’s curse.
Therefore, with no way out… the will of the World called me here.
At least so I thought.
“Are you going already?”
“Yes. I am originally a person who lived in a different World line which progressed through different possibilities.
To defeat the “Witch,” I was temporarily summoned here by the will of the World, but… that duty has been completed just now.”
Bluntly said, my role was that of a temporary employee (without my consent).
Perhaps the will of World line A sought help and relayed thoughts like “I got stuck here. Help me.” To which World line B replied “I guess it can’t be helped…” and dispatched me here.
Although I wasn’t sure if they actually talked that way, I figured the overall meaning would be the same.
“A person who possesses power comparable to a goddess was sent by the world as she descended from heaven… as expected, you are the true Saint…”
This Perverted Glasses Bastard was still spouting nonsense.
It was too troublesome to correct him, so whatever. Just let him say all he wants.
Anyway, I figured I should do something else before I returned home.
It wasn’t like me to do overtime work as a service, but this time was special.
Rather, if I didn’t do anything, this world would still meet its end.
And so, for perhaps the very first time ever, I used up all of my MP at once for healing magic + powering the plants’ forceful growth! Maximum output!
Then, I immediately prepared the next shot by rapidly circulating my mana.
Since the world was so vast, my magic wouldn’t normally reach all locations, so I shaped the magic into spirit-like things and sent them to travel on their own.
You might worry that my magic might fly toward a meaningless place, but there was no need to worry about that.
My current self was a prophet possessing the power of clairvoyance.
Well then, let me be flashy and show off.
Let what happens, happen!
That, was a miracle.
Elrise spread her hands out and unleashed an explosion of light.
A ring of light spread out with her as the center, and the places where light passed through changed dramatically.
Grass began to grow over the desolate wasteland, and the meadow that had been burned down by the “Witch” in the past was revived.
Flowers were in full bloom and polluted lakes and ponds were purified.
The dark sky regained its brightness, as light shone down upon the ground and the clouds broke apart.
The wounded and sick regained their liveliness, and several spirits flying with shining trails of light could be witnessed throughout the world.
Those spirits plunged into the earth, seas, mountains, and forests, melted into them and revived nature one after another.
As people witnessed such a scene, although nobody started it, and nobody had ordered them to… everyone began to naturally clasp their hands in worship.
“Vernell-san, I could only help you this much. This world still has many problems plaguing it, and the lives that were lost to the ‘Witch,’ unfortunately, can never be recovered. Even so, if it is you people, I think you can definitely reach a wonderful future.”
“…Fool, what you did is more than enough.”
Vernell could only laugh at the comrade who left them a huge parting gift at the very end.
The huge debt he already had, which didn’t seem possible for him to ever repay, grew even larger.
He wished to repay her if he could, but unfortunately, she would be leaving this world at any moment.
In that case, he wished to let her leave without worry at the very least. With that thought, Vernell showed her a gentle smile, one which he hadn’t shown since the day he lost Eterna.
“Don’t worry, we’ll take care of the rest. Demons might still roam around, but their number won’t increase anymore. As for what still remains, it is ours to do… this duty is for us, the people who live in this world.”
As Vernell confidently said this, Elrise smiled back in satisfaction.
Then both of them exchanged a firm handshake, followed by Mary who embraced Elrise, as she felt reluctant to part with her.
The light was getting stronger, and their farewell was approaching.
In the midst of that, Elrise suddenly muttered “ah” as if she just remembered something.
“I almost forgot to tell you about this. If you have the opportunity, please visit the island nation known as Ordinary Fuguten. The First Saint Alfrea-sama is sealed there. Eterna-san should be able to release her, and she would be of great help to you.”
“The First Saint… seriously? She hadn’t turned into a Witch?”
“That person is the sole exception. As for the details, please ask her yourself.”
“I see… Well, thanks. If there’s another Saint, she will be a reliable help for the things from now on. I promise I’ll go there and release her.”
The “Witch” might be gone, but humanity’s battle against demons continued.
If during such a stage the First Saint was also there, the battle would be much easier.
He promised to release her, and then spoke again, Elrise’s statements having turned Vernell’s doubt into certainty.
“Well then… El. Please take care of ‘me on the other side.’”
“…You noticed it?”
Towards Vernell’s baiting, Elrise showed a surprised expression.
As he saw her reaction, he thought, As expected.
She was indeed Elrise. She wasn’t a person who just happened to have the same name, but the same person who just happened to belong to a different world.
“When I first introduced myself, you were surprised, right? That reaction was the surprise of knowing my name yet my appearance was different from what you expected. It’s just my guess, but the ‘Vernell’ you know about should be me as a student, right?”
“Also, you said it yourself that it is a World line which progressed through different possibilities.”
To be honest, she seemed to be a completely different person from the Elrise of this world, and he was sure that she had something different in the core of her existence compared to the latter.
At the very least, if it was that filth in Vernell’s memory, she’d been rotten to her core.
Even if the environment changed a little, she still wouldn’t have been able to achieve this much of a change.
To be this different of a person, he could only think that the souls of the two were different.
However, none of that mattered. In any case, the person in front of him wasn’t that filth, but a precious comrade.
“Do you hate me?”
“Don’t joke about it. For me, you are you. You are not related to that filth. You are our precious comrade and benefactor. That is plenty.”
Elrise and Vernell laughed together, which caused Eterna to feel jealous and cling strongly to Vernell’s arm.
She didn’t put it into words, but her expression clearly saids “He is mine.”
The fake Saint of another world smiled deeply at such a heartwarming Saint.
“Please treat her dearly.”
“I’ll do it even without you asking me to.”
As Elrise said that, Vernell embraced Eterna.
There’s no need for it to be said. I belong to Eterna, just as she is mine. His attitude showed such a thing.
Meanwhile, Eterna blushed and hid in his embrace.
“I doubt we’ll meet again, but… please take care of this world, Vernell-san.”
“Aah. Please be healthy on the other side as well.”
Vernell brought out his farewell first, to which Elrise responded with hers.
Surely, they wouldn’t meet again in the future.
They originally belonged to different World lines, and it was a miracle that they had ever managed to meet like this.
However, Vernell would definitely not forget about this encounter.
Only a month and three days had passed since they had first met, but this encounter would surely be one of the most brilliant treasures of his life.
“Well then, everyone… Please stay healthy!”
Then Elrise flew upward as if greeted by the light shining down from heaven, and looked back to the ground once before ascending to heaven.
Vernell and others were left behind as they continued to look at the sky, while Supple genuflected on the ground as he worshiped the sky.
A few… no, dozens of minutes after that.
Vernell moved his gaze away from the sky back to the ground, patting Eterna’s shoulder as he drew her in.
“Well then, we’re going to be busy. We need to make this world a better place, so she won’t laugh at us about it.”
Eterna and Mary nodded to Vernell’s words, and they began to walk away.
They would continue to live on.
In this world, for their comrade who came from another world to rescue them from despair.
Vernell gave one final look toward the sky where Elrise disappeared —
— And after he offered her the gratitude he couldn’t express in words, he started walking again.
I came to and I woke up on a chair.
I rubbed at my eyes for a bit as my blurred vision eventually turned clear, and I could tell I was in my own room.
Even though I said it was my own room, it wasn’t the Saint’s Castle. It was the log house I’d built inside the forest.
As I swayed on the rocking chair, I was stupefied as I stared at the wall of the house.
As I observed the capital’s clock tower using the power of the prophet, I noticed that barely any time had passed since I went to the “other side.”
The date was still the same.
Oi, oi oi oi… Don’t tell me, is it that kind of typical development?
I left my room and went downstairs.
There I saw Leila’s figure who was preparing dinner.
“Ah, Elrise-sama. Since I managed to catch a lot of fish, I thought of making dinner with dishes based on fish.”
Leila and I took turns to prepare for meals, but Leila did it more often.
She’d said, “I can’t make Elrise-sama do such chores!” as she insisted, but personally, I wished she would get used to it already since I was no longer a Saint.
No, that wasn’t it. Leila’s reaction was what she usually did. At the very least, it wasn’t the reaction you’d have after seeing a person who went missing for over a month.
“…I’m looking forward to that. By the way Leila, it seems I fell asleep, but do you know how much time has passed since?”
“Time, is it? I don’t think that much time passed though…”
Yep, “It was all a dream” development confirmed.
I see— …so it was all a dream.
Uwah~ that sure was a typical development. To be honest, I did indeed feel like I had travelled for about a month, and I also remembered clearly about the things I did on the other side, so was it possible for a dream to be that vivid?
No well, it was a good dream, yep. To think I managed to witness the literal dream route of Eterna.
As I was feeling a little down, something fell down from my pocket.
“Oh, Elrise-sama… Isn’t this Augurare?”
“Do you know about it?”
“Yes. It is said that your wish will come true if you keep it inside your pocket, and soldiers often carried it along as they went to the battle. It sure is rare… does Elrise-sama have something you want to come true?”
So it was an ore that could fulfill wishes, huh.
Well, I didn’t remember receiving such…
— It was something I picked up during my journey, an ore with the name of Augurare… there’s a superstition that one’s wish would come true if they had it. I carried it around, hoping my wish would come true, but now I’ll give it to you.
I did receive it! I got this thing from Vernell-san!
In other words… it was like a dream yet not a dream!
I picked up the blue ore and held it firmly.
I had previously thought to sell it once I returned, but I wouldn’t do that anymore.
It seemed that it was indeed effective.
“This is a gift from an important friend. The order of things got jumbled up, but…”
—My wish is indeed fulfilled.
As I said that, Leila’s eyes went wide.
